Dog’s heat death prompts warning

Animal welfare agents issue tips to keep pets
cool as temperatures soar into the high 90s.

After a dog died this week of heat exhaustion in what animal welfare officials are calling the first such call of the season, the Butler County Dog Warden and Animal Friends Humane Society are urging people to protect their pets from the heat.
As temperatures soared into the high 90s, animal welfare agents have issued tips to keep dogs and other pets, especially those kept outside, safe.
Most importantly, they say, do not leave dogs in hot cars.
“Even in the shade, with windows cracked, temperatures inside a vehicle can easily top out over 100 degrees,” said Dog Warden Chief Julie Holmes. “These tragedies are easily prevented.”
Other tips include:
• All animals should have access to shade and fresh water.
• Water should be changed frequently so that it does not become too hot to drink.
• Water bowls should be secured so that they do not get knocked over.
Dog houses should be moved to well shaded areas and off concrete pads, as concrete can hold in heat making it harder for dogs to cool themselves down.
• Make sure chains and cables are not tangled or hooked or could become hooked on debris, keeping the dog from getting to shade or shelter.
• Make sure dogs are not confined in hot garages or porches and have adequate ventilation.
• When possible, bring dogs or smaller animals inside to a cooled area, especially older dogs and puppies that have a tough time in extreme heat conditions.
“If you think your animal is victim to heat exhaustion immediately remove them from direct sun and stop all activity,” said Meg Stephenson, executive director of Animal Friends Humane Society. “Use cool water on the head, pads of feet and groin area to reduce body temperature to a normal state. Offer small amounts of water and contact your veterinarian for further care.”
